A goods elevator, also known as a freight elevator, is a type of lift specifically designed to transport heavy loads, materials, or goods between different floors of a building. Unlike passenger elevators, which focus on comfort and aesthetics, goods elevators prioritize strength, capacity, and durability. They are commonly used in warehouses, factories, shopping centers, construction sites, and industrial buildings where the frequent movement of bulky or heavy items is required.
The design and construction of a goods elevator differ significantly from passenger lifts. The cabin or car is usually made from robust materials such as reinforced steel to withstand heavy loads, often ranging from 500 kilograms to over 5, 000 kilograms depending on the model and application. The doors are wide and strong—often of the vertical bi-parting or horizontal sliding type—to allow easy loading and unloading of goods, sometimes using trolleys, forklifts, or pallets. The floor of the lift car is also designed with non-slip, heavy-duty materials to prevent damage and ensure stability during transport.
