In a typical traction lift, the elevator car is connected via ropes (or belts) over a grooved sheave driven by a motor, and a counterweight is used to balance the car load. This design makes for efficient vertical motion, with reduced energy usage because the motor only has to overcome friction and load differences, not lift the full weight unassisted.
